For a double World Champion and winner of a staggering 373 races, Freddy Maertens was an unlucky man. Unlucky to be riding in the Merckx era, racing against the greatest of them all. Without his nemesis racing against him, how many more races could Freddy have won?
His achievements still astound, not least his performance in the 1977 Vuelta a España, where he claimed the overall victory, the points jersey and an incredible 13 stages.
