Red Walters's Insider's Guide To Calpe.

Red Walters's Insider's Guide To Calpe.

Red Walters is seriously fast. Multiple Grenadian national champ, podium at the Pan American Road Championships - and he has one of the most consistently funny and inventive Instagram accounts out there, too - give it a follow, you won’t regret it.

Red’s a Calpe regular with his UCI Continental team X-Speed United, so what better way to celebrate the launch of The Escape (our Calpe, Mallorca and Girona themed capsule) than to ask Red to give us the lowdown on what makes Calpe the perfect place for an early season getaway?

Hey Red, you’re looking ready for a big season. Why do you choose to Escape to Calpe over other destinations?

I like to train in Calpe over winter as it becomes the undisputed hub of cycling. Good roads of course are essential, but the fact that there are so many other cyclists of all levels out there for good weather and training only increases the morale for every ride.

What was your first Calpe ride/experience like?

My first time in Calpe was on a team camp as I’d joined Vitus Pro Cycling. I was on the lower end of fitness in the team at the time, so it consisted of me getting battered for hours a day for a week.  I loved it.

Who are some of the biggest pros you’ve bumped into?

I think of pros in Calpe like Pokémon, you gotta catch em all. I’ve bumped into most of the big hitters, but notably still missing Pogacar and Vingegaard. They’re ultra rare.

What’s your go-to Calpe training ride route?

My go to Calpe route is a bit of a classic, I’m sure it’s been named by some. But from Calpe, straight out to Castelles de Castelles, up the back side of col de rates. Then down through Tarbena (awesome descent) and back to Calpe via Altea.

What’s your top tip for a Calpe first-timer?

If it rains, TAKE IT EASY! A little drizzle on my first trip meant I decked it on a greasy roundabout which really dampened the vibe… I did the same thing on my second time out too. If its wet or has been wet, consider the roads as ice.

What is the best climb like in Calpe?

My favourite climb for just riding is probably Confrides via Guadalest. It’s a nice steady climb, perfect for longer efforts or zone 2 rides. And you’re usually close to 2 hours by the time you get to the top!

What’s your most memorable Calpe moment?

I’ve got many good and some bad memories from Calpe over the years. I’ll never forget my friend Harry emerging from the darkness at the window after breaking his collarbone and spending the day at the hospital.

I’ve also had some awesome rides with great friends, and even won a race over there at some point!

Big thanks to Red for taking some time out to chat to us in Calpe. Keep an eye on his results this year, he’s on the rise.
