A Miscellany of Le Tour de France (1964-1988) - Cycling Art Print
First Place is Everywhere, Second Is Nowhere. As the Tour grew, so did the rewards for winning. While other sports celebrated amateurism and the corinthian ideal, cycling was rooted firmly in professionalism. Riders were paid to win at all costs and devised some elaborate ruses to get the edge of their opposition, from alcoholic distractions to downright dirty tricks.
But the peloton remained united by one thing: the brutal beauty of the Tour and the struggle they faced daily. While they would do anything to steal the win on the road, the peloton took any chance they could to relieve themselves from their suffering. Honour amongst thieves.
