1987: The year Stephen Roche reached cycling’s highest peak. Giro d’Italia. Tour de France. World Championships. The elusive Triple Crown, conquered in a single season. Only Merckx had done it before, only Pogacar has done it since.
Villach was the bonus, the exclamation mark at the end of a landmark season. Nominally riding for Sean Kelly, Roche marked the moves, played the loyal team-mate – and then seized his moment. From the back of the group he dived inside, launching an audacious attack that stunned the favourites. Seconds of hesitation became a winning gap. By the line, the rainbow jersey was his.
It was the zenith of a career that burned white-hot for one glorious year. The “prettiest pedaller” of them all, immortalised forever in green.
